American super-swimmer Lauren Brandon enjoyed a whopping three-minute lead over Canadian Heather Wurtele after the swim, but Wurtele's women's-best bike 2:15 split was enough to get her into the lead starting the run. American Jacalyn Hering managed the day's fastest run split to get herself past Brandon and within 52-seconds of Wurtele by the finish, but Wurtele's 4:15:23 split was just enough to net her a third-straight Ironman 70.3 Campeche title. Hering took second while Brandon hung tough for the final spot on the podium.

Weiss wins as Van Lierde fades

Cuba's Michel Gonzalez led the way out of the water in 25:45 with Belgium's Frederik Van Lierde 46 seconds back and his countryman, Pieter Heemeryck, along with American Ben Hoffman, another 20 seconds behind.  Van Lierde, the 2013 Ironman world champion, took the lead after 30 km into the bike and blasted into T2 with a lead of 2:27 on Weiss and about four minutes on Heemeryck and Hoffman. From the start of the run Weiss rapidly gained time on Van Lierde and was in the lead well before the 10 km mark. Weiss would post the day's fastest run split (1:17:12) while Van Lierde would fade throughout the run as Heemeryck, Hoffman and another American, Matt Hanson, would all go by. Heemeryck managed to hold off Hoffman, who was competing in his first race since having to pull out of Kona last year due to a stress fracture. Weiss's 3:50:02 finishing time was almost 90 seconds up on Heemeryck and just under three-minutes ahead of Hoffman.
