After his impressive race in Brazil and the bronze medal at the recent Ironman 70.3 World Championship, Don had hoped to add the Ironman World Championship to a resume that includes world championships over the standard distance triathlon, duathlon and aquathlon.

“Hey guys, I’m in Kona [emergency], just getting the finishing touches for my Kona race on Saturday," a good-natured Don said in a post on Instagram. "I am going for a new aero look. I’ve heard that’s the way to beat Jan (Frodeno), Sebi (Sebastian Kienle) and Patrick (Lange), the podium guys from last year."

"Unfortunately, I got hit by a car this morning and I’ve got a fracture in my C2 vertebrae up high," he continued. "The good news is I don’t have to have an operation and fly to Honolulu in a helicopter—that would have been pretty cool."
