The new racing season begins the same way the old one ended: Daniela Ryf wins and no one appears able to challenge her.

At the Swiss star's season opening event at Ironman 70.3 Oceanside, the race started as expected - Great Britain's Holly Lawrence, known for her swimming ability, was the first out of the water in 23:54. Australian Ellie Salthouse and Ryf followed her into the transition area, and from then on the race became the Daniela Ryf show.

After a 2:17:06 bike split Ryf was over six minutes ahead of Lawrence. While Ryf lost a bit of time on the run, her 4:09:19 finishing time still put her 4:47 ahead of Lawrence. with Salthouse taking third in 4:16:41.

Kanute rides clear

After both Jan Frodeno and Lionel Sanders had to pull out due to injury, the men's race appeared to be wide open and lived up to its potential as an exciting race.

American Erik Lagerstrom was first out of the water in 21:35 with Dylan McNeice and Lagerstrom's countryman Ben Kanute on his heels.

Through the opening part of the bike Rodolphe Von Berg (USA) moved into second behind Kanute, who had quickly moved to the front. By T2 Von Berg used the day's fastest bike (2:10:45) to hit T2 with with Kanute.

Out on the run Kanute prevailed and crossed the finish line first in 3:49:25 with Von Berg just 12 seconds behind in second. Former long-distance specialist Adam Bowden (GBR) was able to use his strength in the last discipline to take third in 3:53:53.
