It now seems to be an unwritten rule: Every two years, Italy's Guilio Molinari will win the European middle distance title. After his victories in 2014 and 2016, the 30-year-old continued his string at the ETU European Multisport Championships, taking the race in Ibiza, Spain in 2:51:35. (A storm flooded the roads on the Spanish island, forcing organizers to shorten the bike course to 45 km.)
For the Italian, it was the second victory this season after taking Challenge Riccione. Barely 40 seconds after the winner, Denmark's Miki Taagholt (2:52:16) finished, and seconds later Spain's Albert Moreno Molins (2:52:25) took third.
In the women's race, Belgium's Alexandra Tondeur ended up on top of the podium. The reigning European Long-Distance Championship silver medalist finished in 3:12:20. Second was Great Britain's Sarah Lewis (3:14:21), while third went to her compatriot Alice Hector (3:15:05).
