There weren't many surprises in the first discipline of the first WTS race of the year in Abu Dhabi most of the men stayed close together through the first 750 m of the swim. Richard Varga (SVK) tried to get clear but a group stayed on his heels. Varga was the first to get out of the water in 8:38, ahead of Henri Schoeman (RSA) and Vincent Luis (FRA).

Cycling group rides together

As we saw last year on the first corner of the 18.9 km bike course a number of athletes went down on the first corner of the race, but a large group ventured out on the bike. Schoeman, Ben Kanute (USA) and Vincent Luis (FRA) got away from the group early, but were quickly caught. Over the last five laps of the bike the groups all got together, so the favorites all climbed off the bike together.

Mola runs to victory

New Zealand's Hayden Wilde was the first athlete onto the run course. The large group kept the Kiwi in their sights, though. Brit Alex Yee overtook Wilde after the first of two rounds and took the lead in his first WTS race.

Over the last kilometer there was a duel between Mola and Yee, which the was eventually taken by the reigning world champion from Spain thanks to a 14-minute run split. Mola got to the line just three seconds ahead of Yee in 52:00. Third place went to Mola's compatriot Fernando Alarza, who finished 52:12.
