Mario Mola continued his string of wins in Hamburg thanks to a blistering run that propelled him through the lead pack to his third straight win at the longest running event on the WTS series, the ITU World Triathlon Hamburg.

Blummenfelt, Brownlee and Luis breakaway

After a swim that didn't really separate the pack too much, Kristian Blummenfelt (NOR), Jonathan Brownlee (GBR) and Vincent Luis (FRA) managed to break away on the bike, but could never extend it passed 30 seconds. The huge chase pack clamored into T2 about 25 seconds down, setting up an exciting 5 km run. Normally one would imagine a 25-second lead for Brownlee would be enough, but the 2016 Rio silver medalist is coming back from some injuries,of late, which no-doubt left speedy runners like Mola and Richard Murray (RSA) some hope as they started the run.

Mola flies to the win

The breakaway's lead wasn't nearly enough to hold off the speedsters behind. First to succumb was Blummenfelt, who grabbed his stomach early on in the run and was reduced to a trot for much of the rest of the run. At the end of the first lap Luis and Brownlee were still clear, but Murray was gaining fast, with Mola about 10 m back.

Murray was the first to join the lead duo, but when Mola made his move he blasted by the trio and opened up a sizeable gap, one which he held through the last 800 m of the race to take his third straight Hamburg title and put himself even further in front in the WTS standings. Luis would take the sprint for second, with Murray rounding out the podium.
