Determined not to end his season with his disappointing result in Kona, Lionel Sanders looked like his normal self in taking this weekend's race in Indian Wells-La Quinta. For the women, Chelsea Sordara made an impressive 70.3 debut to take the women's race.

Australian Matt Franklin (AUS) led the swim in 24:24 with favorites Joe Gambles (AUS) and Lionel Sanders (CAN) 1:03 and 2:16 behind. Once on the bike Sanders was quick to get up to front, but couldn't drop the lead group and found himself arriving in T2 with a group that included Kennett Peterson (USA), Timothy Winslow (USA) and Gambles after his 2:04:24 bike split on his new Canyon.

On the run Sanders pulled clear of the rest of the field, leading Gambles by 30 seconds at 10 km and opening up more time over the final 11 km of the run to win in 3:45:59. Gambles finished second with Peterson rounding out the podium.

Sodaro wins debut

Earlier this year Chelsea Sodaro took the Huatulco ITU Triathlon World Cup in Mexico over the sprint distance, which makes her final race of 2018, an Ironman 70.3 debut, even more impressive as the American ran her way to the women's title.

Haley Chura led the women out of the water, with Sodaro and countrywoman Kinsey Laine coming out almost two-minutes behind. On the bike, though, Australian Carrie Lester charged to the front and came into transition 1:44 up on Sodaro and 3:34 ahead of Chura.

On the run, though, Sodaro's short-course speed prevailed as she posted a 1:19:24 run split to take the win. Chura was also able to run past Lester to take second, which put the Australian on the final step of the podium.
