Ironman world champion Patrick Lange started his 2019 triathlon season with a win. The 32-year-old won Ironman 70.3 Vietnam, which served as the Asia-Pacific championship. The two-time Kona champion, who has chosen a different race plan this year, prevailed over a strong field.

Lange came out of the water in 22:31 in a group with all the other favorites including Tim Don, Terenzo Bozzone, Mauricio Mendez, Tim Van Berkel, Craig Alexander and Tim Reed. On the bike Tim Reed took the initiative and opened up a lead of 2:3 on the group by the end of the 90-km bike. Lange once again showed his running prowess in the hot half marathon - his 1:15:55 split was the fastest of the day and earned him the victory in 3:49:09. Tim Van Berkel (3:50:57) finished 1:47 behind. The podium was completed by Tim Reed (3:52:14 hours), who was second just a week earlier at Ironman Australia.

Lawrence from start to finish

In the women's race Great Britain's Holly Lawrence lived up to her role as favorite. Only a week after she won the Ironman 70.3 North American Pro Championship in St. George, Utah, she landed at the top of the podium in Vietnam. A particularly strong swimming and cycling performance laid the foundation for her victory in the Asia-Pacific Championship. Lawrence crossed the finish line in 4:04:41, followed by Sarah Crowley (4:08:55), who was 4:14 behind. Bronze went to Radka Kahlefeldt, who finished in 4:11:04.
