Kristian Blummenfelt and Terenzo Bozzone proved to be too much for Javier Gomez at Ironman 70.3 Bahrain, foiling his quest for the million dollar bonus for the Triple Crown.

After winning the first two legs of the Triple Crown (Ironman 70.3 Dubai and the Ironman 70.3 World Championship), Javier Gomez was a win away from taking the million dollar bonus that would have come with a win at Ironman 70.3 Bahrain. The day was not to see the big payout, though, as Terenzo Bozzone rode to a three-minute lead off the bike, only to be out-run by Kristian Blummenfelt.
Gomez appeared to be on track for a big day after leading the way out of the water with a sizeable lead on the rest of the contenders. Once on the bike, though, Bozzone ripped through the course, posting a 1:58 split that put him three minutes ahead of Blummenfelt off the bike, with Gomez a whopping seven minutes down after the windy ride. Matt Trautman rounded out the top five.
Once out on the run course, though, Bozzone couldn't hold off Blummenfelt, who ran the day's fastest half-marathon (1:13) to move ahead of the Kiwi at 15 km and eventually take the win by 38 seconds. Gomez made a gallant charge early on in the half marathon, but couldn't maintain his ambitious pace as was eventually passed by Sven Riederer and had to settle with fourth.
