Thanks to heavy rains that forced organizers to cancel the swim due to high pollution counts, the ITU World Triathlon Mixed Series Nottingham had to be turned into a duathlon, featuring a 1.5 km run/ 7 km bike/ 1.5 km run for all the athletes.

Britain powers to the front

Right from the gun the team from Great Britain seemed to be in control. Fresh off a win a week ago at WTS Leeds, Georgia Taylor-Brown powered to the front, opening up a gap of 23 seconds by the end of the bike and continuing to gain time on the rest of the field from there on. Taylor-Brown handed off to Ben Dijkstra, who kept the UK team in front when he tagged Sophie Coldwell. Alex Yee kept his team in front, crossing the line in 1:23:13 with a handy lead.

After the second leg of the race there were six teams in contention for the rest of the medals, including Switzerland, Canada, Italy, Netherlands, Germany and France. It was the third leg that turned out to be the deciding one for the final spots on the podium as Switzerland's Alissa Koning moved her team into contention, battling France's Leonie Periault for second. Behind them Italy, Canada and Germany were battling to stay close.

As Yee cruised to the win, it was Switzerland's Adrien Brifford who would fly through the last run to net his country the silver medal, with Pierre Le Corre hanging tough for France to get them the final spot on the podium.
