After the 1.9 km swim Austrian Alexander Gräf led the lead group that included the favorites  - Germans Nils Frommhold and Franz Löschke, Jesper Svensson (SWE) and Thomas Steger (AUT) - thanks to his 24:33 split.

Out on the bike it was Steger who pushed the pace at the front early on, but in the last 20 km of the 90 km bike Italian Giulio Molinari pushed clear on the descents and led into T2 after a 2:09:37 bike. Löschke followed 33 seconds later, with Steger in third 1:19 minutes behind Molinari. Frommhold was dropped to ninth after a long time in the lead group, heading out on the run 3:33 back.

Löschke holds off Steger's challenge

After the transition it was the 27-year-old Steger who set the pace and opened up a lead of a minute after the first 10 km over Löschke. Steger extended his lead through 16 km, but over the last five km the Austrian paid for his aggressive early race strategy. Löschke, who had paced himself perfectly, pulled past Steger for the overall win in 3:52:37 thanks to the day's fastest run split of 1:12:12. Steger followed 37 seconds later, with Michael Weiss (AUT) rounding out the podium with his 3:55:43 finishing time.

Svensk powers on the bike

For the women, as expected strong-swimming Anna-Lena Pohl led the way out of the water, opening up a lead of just under two minutes on Germany's Julia Gajer and Bianca Steurer (AUT). On the bike, though, it was Sweden's Sara Svensk who moved from sixth out of the water to first off the bike thanks to a 2:25:31 bike split, the fastest of the day. That put her 1:30 up on Steurer into T2. Laura Zimmermann was third off the bike (3:57 behind), with Gajer 4:26 behind Svensk.

Svensk ran a solid 1:23:15 run split to take the win in 4:26:05. Steurer hung on for second, 2:06 back, with Gajer, who was making her comeback to racing after a long maternity of over a year, rounding out the podium in 4:30:26).
