The final big triathlon event of the summer 2018 in Germany, Ironman 70.3 Rügen, featured bright sunshine and a strong pro men's field. Florian Angert led the way in the water and a large lead pack formed around him as he led the way out of the water,.Ironman world champion Patrick Lange was 45 seconds behind after the swim.

The chase group that included Horst Reichel and Lange worked hard on the bike, but could not reduce the gap on Angert, who held a four-minute lead into T2. Angert held on for the win as Lange didn't really show his usual running strength until fhe second half of the run.

With a finish time of 3:47:35, Angert celebrated his first victory on Rügen. Lange was able to break away from Reichel after just under 12 km and finished in 3:50:05, just two minutes behind the surprise winner. Reichel completed the podium 3:51:56.
