In his first race since his runner-up finish at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in South Africa last year, Great Britain's Alistair Brownlee started the day on track for a typical race-winning strategy - pulling clear on the swim and seemingly ready to force the rest of the field to play catch up through the day. That all got derailed in a hurry, though, as the two-time Olympic gold medalist struggled with his helmet in transition and apparently had other bike issues. His lead quickly evaporated and it wasn't long before he found himself out of the top 10.

In the meantime Germany's Andreas Dreitz wasted no time pulling clear of the rest of the competition on the bike and blasting through an impressive 2:11 bike split to enjoy a 6:30 lead over Italy's Domenico Passuello starting the run, with the chase group, now led by Brownlee, over 10 minutes down.

Once on the run Brownlee blasted by Passuello at 12 km to move into second, but Dreitz's 1:17 run split was more than enough to hang on for the win. Bownlee would use a 1:11 run split to get himself to second just over five minutes down, with Pasuello hanging on for third.

Philipp flies to another win

The women's race saw pre-race favorite Laura Philipp (GER) dominate. Second out of the water behind Poland's Malgorzata Otworowska, Philipp was five minutes ahead of Switzerland's Nina Derron off the bike and then blasted through the run to finish over 10-minutes ahead. Derron would take second, while Italy's Marta Bernardi would get past Otworowska on the run to round out the podium.
