A "grade four sacral stress fracture" on his right side has put Ben Hoffman out of this year's Ironman World Championship. The runner-up in 2014 (he finished ninth last year and fourth in 2016) joins some other big names who have been forced out of this year's race - two-time Kona champion Jan Frodeno (who also has a stress fracture in his sacrum), last year's sixth place finisher Terenzo Bozzone and three-time top-10 Kona finisher Boris Stein.
Hoffman made the announcement via his social media channels today. He says he will be on the island to represent his sponsors and support his team mates who will be racing.
"I fully believe that I will put this behind me and I'll return to a high level of racing," Hoffman says. "I am already looking forward to 2019."
