Anne Haug, who finished third at the Ironman and Ironman 70.3 World Championships last year has announced her 2019 schedule. As she did last year, the 36-year-old started at Ironman 70.3 Dubai, finishing second (she won last year) with a strong performance. Before the Ironman World Championship in October, Haug will compete in four races: Challenge Mogán Gran Canaria on April 27, Challenge Samorin / "The Championship" on June 30, the Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt on June 30 and the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nice on September 7th.
"The big goal is sure to be Hawaii, but the races in Frankfurt and Samorin are also extremely important to Anne, as they are very prestigious events where many world-class athletes will be competing, "says Haug's manager, Frank Übelhack. The Ironman Frankfurt was a race dear to Haug's heart and a chance to race at home for her fans.
The upcoming race in Gran Canaria will again serve as an important test for Haug as she exeriments with a modified training methodology.
Haug will keep her options open when it comes to the 70.3 worlds in Nice.
"The (Ironman) 70.3 World Championship in Nice is a very attractive course and would suit Anne well, (but) the final decision will be made in the late season," says Übelhack.
"Only as many races as needed, but with some big highlights."
Haug's coach, Dan Lorang, who also coaches Jan Frodeno, explains how the races were selected:
"For Anne we decided on a very focused schedule, with only as many competitions as necessary, but always big ones. There are individual differences for every athlete, so you have to find the best mix for each athlete. In the program we're following with Anne, too many races would be counterproductive, it's about pooling physical and mental energy for the highlights."
