American Eric Lagerstrom led the way out of the water with countrymen Rodolphe Von Berg and Andrew Kelly about 20 seconds behind. Andrew Yoder (USA) managed to come out of the water a bit clear of the chase pack that included countryman Ben Hoffman and a surprisingly fast-swimming Sebastian Kienle (GER) - the chase pack was between about two-minutes behind as they hit T2. Kona runner-up Bart Aernouts (BEL) trailed by 2:39 after the swim..

Kienle made his typical charge on the bike early before a rumored position violation derailed his day, leaving Von Berg to lead the way into T2 with a whopping 3:32 lead over Sam Long (USA) and just over four minutes on Aernouts. Von Berg cruised through a 1:17:15 half-marathon on the challenging St. George course to easily hold off Aernouts, who posted a speedy 1:14:54 to get second. Canadian Jackson Laundry ran his way to the final spot on the podium in what turned out to be a tight race for the top-five positions - 89 seconds separated second to fifth positions.

Lawrence stays at the front throughout the day

After trailing American Haley Chura by two seconds after the swim, Great Britain's Holly Lawrence, the 2016 Ironman 70.3 world champion, quickly broke away on the bike with Canadian Paula Findlay coming along for company. Lawrence would eventually pull clear of Findlay, too, hitting T2 with almost 3:30 on Findlay and almost six minutes on American Joely McCauley, who was backing up her runner-up finish at the Ironman North American Championship in Texas last weekend in style.

There was no touching Lawrence on the run as she padded her lead on Findlay with a 1:21:16 run split to take the win by almost eight minutes. Findlay got to the line just under two-minutes ahead of countrywoman Heather Wurtele, who moved from fifth off the bike to the final spot on the podium for another top finish in St. George.
