Former Kona age group champion Svenja Thoes (GER) took a close race over Angela Naeth at Ironman Cozumel, running away from the Canadian in the final 10 km to net the title by just 44 seconds as both women broke the nine-hour barrier. For the men Michael Weiss dominated with a sub-eight hour performance, biking clear of the rest of the field and staying well ahead through the marathon.

Thoes on the run

American Kelsey Withrow led a group of three that included countrywoman Laurel Wassner, Thoes and France's Anne Basso by a little over two minutes out of the water. On the bike, though, the race quickly became the Angela Naeth show. Fresh off her eighth-place Kona finish, Naeth overcame her six-minute deficit and would move to the front of the race by the 100 km mark, passing then-leader Thoes in the process. Naeth enjoyed a four-minute lead into T2, but Thoes would reel her back by the halfway point of the marathon. From there on in it remained a close battle for the win, with Thoes getting to the line first to take the title. American Lisa Roberts was the last pro woman out of the water, but she moved through the field to take the final spot on the podium.

Weiss flies on the bike

Spain's Ivan Rana had a huge lead of almost three minutes out of the water over a group of eight that included another of the pre-race favorites, American Justin Daerr. Weiss led the second chase group out of the water at 3:35 and quickly moved to the front of the race. By 40 km he was in front and leading by over a minute and the lead would continue to grow through the rest of the race. By the end of the bike he was 11 minutes up on Germany's Philipp Mock, just under 12 minutes up on Switzerland's Samuel Huerzeler, and about 17 minutes ahead of Rana and Daerr. On the run Huerzeler would cruise past Mock and hold on to the runner-up spot, while Rana would use a 2:50 marathon split to move himself to third.
