Kirsty Jahn (CAN) joined the sub-9 club thanks to a dominating bike ride that put her well clear of the field and allowed her to run her way to her first Ironman title. Sweden's Jesper Svensson put a damper on the all-Brazil podium by taking the race over Igor Amorelli (BRA) thanks to his own impressive ride.

Svensson leads from start to finish

Svensson came out of the water with a slight lead over Brazilians Marcus Fernandes and Luiz Francisco Palva Ferreira and a lead of almost a minute over Amorelli. Once on the bike the Swede dominated, coming into T2 with a 5:29 lead on Amorelli. Svensson padded that lead by a minute by the finish to take the men's title. Amorelli hung tough for second, while Thiago Vihnal (BRA) scorched through a 2:50 marathon to round out the podium.

Jahn bikes her way to the win

American Haley Chura dominated the swim, finishing over five minutes up on the rest of the women's field. Jahn was almost six minutes down, while American Sarah Piampiano trailed by over 10 minutes starting the bike. Chura rode strongly out in front, but Jahn steadily clawed back time - the gap at the halfway point was 1:14 and by 141 km Jahn was out in front with a lead of over three minutes on Chura, with Piampiano over eight minutes down in fourth.

Starting the run Jahn's lead had ballooned to 7:27 on Chura, 9:30 on Bruna Mahn (BRA) and 11:20 on Piampiano. A former collegiate and national team runner for Canada, Jahn wasn't likely to be caught on the run and her 3:01:06 marathon was more than enough to keep her clear as she blasted into the sub-9 club with her 8:54:58 time. Piampiano ran her way to the runner-up spot thanks to a 2:58 marathon split with Mahn rounding out the podium.
