Boris Stein celebrated an outstanding comeback victory at Ironman Kalmar and secured his spot at the Ironman World Championship on October 12. After the 34-year-old completed his final full-distance race one year ago in Denmark at Ironman Copenhagen he's struggled with injury problems. Those injury issues forced him to pull out of Kona last year. Stein has now announced that he's back and in especially good bike form.
Fastest bike split
Stein trailed the leaders out of the water by about five minutes, but once he covered the 180 km bike in an impressive 4:03:08 he was in front. In the marathon, France's Denis Chevrot ran just under two minutes faster than Stein, but could't catch the German for the win. After a 2:53:37 run Stein came home in 7:49:17 to claim his third Ironman win. Chevrot was 1:45 behind. The podium was completed by Denmark's Mathias Petersen in 7:52:31.
Ironman Kalmar and Ironman Copenhagen alternate having a men's and women's pro field - the pro women will compete in Copenhagen tomorrow.
