After a bronze-medal finish at the last major games in Rio, Henri Schoeman added a gold medal from the Commonwealth Games to his increasingly impressive resume, holding off a fast-charging Jacob Birtwhistle for the win.

Proving that half-distance racers have a lot to worry about through the rest of the season, defending men's champ Alistair Brownlee led the way out of the water after a choppy swim, just ahead of New Zealand's Tayler Reid. Henri Schoeman and Jonathan Brownle were close behind, with Australian junior world champ Matt Hauser and Scotland's Marc Austin also in the mix. Those six pulled clear on the bike, with the Brownlee brothers doing the lion's share of the work up front, trying to convince the rest of the group to help out.

A chase pack of 10 that included some of the pre-race favorites like Richard Murray (RSA) and Jacob Birtwhistle (AUS) found themselves 20 seconds behind after the first of four laps on the bike in the wet conditions. By the end of the bike the gap was up to 30 seconds, setting things up for the 5 km run.

Within a few hundred meters of the two-loop course Schoeman made his move, going to the front and gapping the rest of the group. Alistair Brownlee dropped back quickly, which makes one wonder if he's still dealing with the calf issue that forced him out of a few races in the lead up to the games. Brownlee and Austin appeared to be battling for the silver medal, but then, with just over 1 km to go, Birtwhistle managed to run himself into the picture, moving passed Brownlee and Austin.

In the end though Schoeman's perfect strategy netted him the win. Birtwhistle flew through a 14:36 run to take the silver medal with Austin rounding out the podium.
