There was no touching Lionel Sanders at Ironman 70.3 Pucon today as he blasted away from the rest of the field on the bike and easily held on for a convincing win, while Barbara Riveros looked like she might be in a two-woman race for the win ... until she flew away from Ellie Salthouse over the half-marathon to take the women's title for the fourth time.

Sanders continues to fly

Since October Lionel Sanders has finished second in Kona and won Ironman Arizona by a whopping 13:30 over a competitive field. So it comes as no surprise that the Canadian easily handled the field at Ironman 70.3 Pucon today. His continuing improvement in the water, though, will not be good news for his competitors: Sanders came out of the water 1:40 behind Xterra world champ Mauricio Mendez Cruz (MEX) and Chile's Felipe Barraza. He was only 1:14 behind Brazilian Olympian Reinaldo Colucci.

Once on the bike, though, it didn't take long for Sanders to whip by the field - his 2:01:16 split was almost 12 minutes than the chase pack could muster. While Mendez Cruz managed to run 1:45 quicker, he was well back at the line in second. Barraza rounded out the top three.

Riveros runs away

Barbara Riveros defended her title in her home country thanks to a stellar run that put her well clear of the women's field. After finishing the swim just three seconds behind Ellie Salthouse, Riveros stayed with the Australian through the bike. On the run, though, the three-time Olympian thrilled the Chilean fans with a nine-minute win thanks to a 1:21:58 split that left the rest of the competition in her wake - no one else in the top five managed to break 1:30 for the half marathon.
