Well this is going to be interesting - fresh off her recent record-setting day at the Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt (click here to recap our coverage of that race), Switzerland's Daniela Ryf will take on fellow three-time Kona champ, Australian Mirinda Carfrae, at Ironman 70.3 Gdynia on August 5.
Carfrae is coming back after a year of maternity leave, having given birth to baby Isabelle last year. She finished second at the Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship in Cairns, Australia last month.
Ryf has only raced twice this year, putting together convincing wins at Ironman 70.3 Rapperswil and then destroying the women's field in Frankfurt. Race director Michal Drelich is hoping the added interest from having the Kona champions in the race will help the sport in Poland, especially when it comes to women's participation.
"Women’s triathlon cannot get any better than that," Drelich says. "I am convinced this will be a great promotion of the sport of triathlon and may encourage more women here in Poland to take on swimming, cycling and running in the near future."
Two former Ironman 70.3 Gdynia champions, Diana Riesler (GER) and Lisa Hütthaler (AUT), are also slated to compete in the race.
For the men, Germany's 2015 Gdynia champ, Nils Frommhold, is back and will take on American Tim O'Donnell.
There are over 2,000 athletes registered for the 70.3 race in Gdynia and another 1,500 set to compete in the various "side events."
