Dense concentrations of algae in Lake Taupo forced the cancellation of the swim and turned the race into a 3 km/ 90 km/ 21 km effort won by Kiwis Amelia Watkinson and Mike Phillips.

Watkinson took the lead on the bike and then padded that lead to end the year with a home-country win, the same way she started it in January with a win at the Port of Tauranga Half. In between she's won a ton of races in Asia (she has spent much of the last few years training in Thailand) and Europe, along with a third-place finish at the Asia-Pacific 70.3 championships a few weeks ago. Laura Siddall was second off the bike, but couldn't hold off American Jocelyn McCauley and Australia's Laura Dennis and had to settle with fourth.

After a runner- up finish a year ago, Phillips was off the bike ahead of Braden Currie and held off his countryman through the run to take the win by 2:30. Callum Millward rounded out the podium.
