Laura Philipp (GER) dominated the run after coming off the bike in a group of three to capture the women's title over a stacked field at Ironman 70.3 St. Polten. Austria's very own Michael Weiss thrilled the crowd with a come-from-behind victory to take the men's race.

Philipp takes the foot race

Helle Frederiksen (DEN) led the way out of the water with Germans Anja Beranek and Laura Philipp (who's swimming has improved dramatically over the winter) over a minute back. The pair didn't take long to blast their way to the front and by 25.6 km into the ride Philipp and Beranek had joined Frederiksen in the lead. Austrian's Lisa Huetthaler and Eva Wutti gave chase in fourth and fifth, but would never threaten the first three.

Off the bike the three leaders were together, at which point the result seemed pretty much ordained as Philipp used her excellent running skills to pull clear. Frederiksen managed to keep the gap to under a minute through the first 10 km, but by the end of the run the gap was a solid three minutes. Beranek would round out the podium.

Weiss blasts the run

Germany's Florian Angert was first out of the water, but the top-10 were all less than 25 seconds behind the German heading out onto the bike. From there it didn't take Italy's Giulio Molinari to make his mark as he rode clear of the chasing group behind him. By the end of the ride the Italian led a group of seven that included Ruedi Wild (SUI), Angert, Michael Raelert (GER), Johann Ackermann (GER), Martin Bader (AUT), Paul Teitmavr (AUT) and Yvan Jarrige (FRA) by two minutes. Another minute behind was Austrian Michael Weiss.

Weiss would put together the day's fastest run to mow down the field ahead of him, putting together a 1:09:28 split that got him to the line almost two minutes up on Wild with Molinari hanging on to the final spot ont he podium.
