For many it wasn't a surprise at all. When Patrick Lange set a new Kona run course record (2:39:45) to finish third at the Ironman World Championship many triathlon fans from across the world were stunned. For those who have been following the German's rapid rise through the Ironman ranks, though, there were no surprises when it came to Lange's Kona success.
He won his first go at long distance racing, the shortened Ironman Texas event in May, signalling his potential in the sport. He's coached by an Ironman legend - Faris Al Sultan - who managed to prepare his athlete impeccably for the big day in Hawaii. After serving a five-minute penalty 50 km into the bike, Lange started the run in 22nd place and ran his way to third. His amazing run broke the course record held by Ironman icon Mark Allen, who was at the finish line - the ever-polite Lange apologized to Allen at the line for breaking his record.
It was an amazing year, one which our readers have acknowledged by picking Lange as our "Newcomer of the year."
