The International Olympic Committee has added the Triathlon Mixed Relay to the program for the 2020 Olympic Games in 2020. It will serve as a third event in the games along with the men's and women's individual competitions.

The Mixed Relay consists of teams with two men and two women who all complete a short course triathlon consisting of a 300 m swim, 8 km bike and 2 km run.

“We are absolutely delighted with this decision," says Marisol Casado, President of ITU and IOC Member. "We’ve been pushing for the Mixed Relays to be included in the Programme for quite a long time, as it is an event that gives the sport something very important: a sense of team building. But most important, is an event that demonstrates that women and men can compete together but both are equally important to the success of the team."

The Mixed Relays are already part of the programs of the Youth Olympic Games, the Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games and have been added to the Pan American Games.

“It will be amazing if we could have two opportunities to get a medal at the Olympic Games,” said American Gwen Jorgensen, the gold medalist from Rio last year.
