Mexico's Mauricio Mendez and American Allison Baca were too tough for the rest of their competition at Xterra Chile. For 2016 Xterra world champ Mendez it was a sixth career Xterra title, while it was a first cross tri win for Baca, who was competing in only her second Xterra race.

Mendez from start to finish

Just 22, Mendez has become a major player in the world of Xterra. With his sights firmly set on getting the world title back later this year, Mendez appears to be on track for another great year of racing. Branden Rakita (USA) stayed on the Mexican's feet through the swim and was close through 7 km of the ride, but was eventually caught by Kiwi Kieran McPherson, who also pulled clear on the bike and would eventually finish second.

Baca pulls clear on the run

Before she got married to Mexican national mountain bike champ Tony Baca, Allison Linnell ran for the University of Washington and won her age group in her first Ironman - the world championship in Kona, no less, in 2012. She competed as a pro cyclist for two years before setting her sights on the triathlon world in 2017.

Baca trailed Mexican Olympian Fabiola Corona out of the water and the two traded the lead on the bike. Once on the run, though, Baca posted the day's fastest run split to cruise to the win. Corona hung in for second while Argentina's Carolina Nieva finished third.

“This race in Chile was one of the most beautiful races I’ve ever done, also one of the hardest. And I did not expect to win so that was an amazing surprise,” Baca said after the race. “I’ve had such a blast here in Chile enjoying the views and the mountains."
