Vincent Luis seems to be getting very good at dialing in a great performance on one big day - you know, like an ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Final. (Anyone else want to put his name down as one to watch in Tokyo in a couple of years?) For the second year in a row the Frenchman put together a sublime performance to take the overall victory in the final WTS race of the season and move himself to second in the overall standings. The winner of the world championship, for the third straight year, no less, was Mario Mola, who put together a remarkably consistent season and put together an excellent runner-up finish to finish up another stellar season in style.

Alistair Brownlee DQd in the swim

The rough and choppy swim saw Alistair Brownlee receive the first DQ of his sporting career - the two-time Olympic champ went on the wrong side of one of the buoys, a huge disappointment for the British athlete who was in such great form after coming off a brilliant runner-up finish at the 70.3 world champs a few weeks ago. Brownlee posted on twitter after the race that he was very disappointed and attributed the mistake to being "disorientated after being hit and held under the water in the roughest swim I’ve ever done."

Luis was part of a lead group that included Richard Varga (SVK) and Henry Schoeman (RSA) into transition, with Jonathan Brownlee (GBR) in close pursuit. A group formed early on the bike with Brownlee, Schoeman, Kristian Blummenfelt (NOR), Luis, Dorian Coninx (FRA) and Belgium's Marten Van Riel, but a crash put Luis out of that picture. The group was whittled down to two towards the end of the bike, but when Van Riel dropped a chain with 1 km to go that left Blummenfelt alone in front heading into T2.

Blummenfelt is getting all-too-familiar with the process of holding a lead off the bike and then watching Mario Mola run him down, but this time the Spaniard had some company up front in the form of Luis, with Schoeman and fellow South African Richard Murray, along with another Frenchman, Pierre Le Corre, all in the hunt with 5 km to go.

In the end there was simply no stopping Luis, who pulled clear of Mola and Murray to take his second straight world title. Mola was happy to see his team mate take the win, knowing full well he had the world title locked up. Murray would round out the podium.
