Luis and Zaferes take Super League Championship titles

Vincent Luis needed to win and have Henri Schoeman place no higher than third in the Day 2 Enduro (which all happened), while Katie Zaferes lost the sprint to Cassandre Beaugrand, but took the overall championship title at the Super League Finale in Singapore.

After a flat tire in yesterday's Eliminator race put Vincent Luis's apparent hold on the Super League Championship in jeopardy, the Frenchman roared back to take Day 2's Enduro and, thanks to a runner-up finish by Jonathan Brownlee that relegated Henri Schoeman to third, took the overall championship, too.

For the women Katie Zaferes lost a sprint to Cassandra Beaugrand, but her huge lead in the standings made even a runner-up finish moot.

After a flat tire seemingly ended his hope to win the overall Super League title, Vincent Luis\'s big win in the final race, coupled with Henri Schoeman\'s third-place finish, netted him the win by just two points.

    Luis fights back

After his disappointing day on Saturday, Vincent Luis took no chances and bided his time in the Enduro race today.

"I didn't want to lead today, I just wanted to keep with as many people as possible - pure tactics I wanted to save myself until the last run," Luis said after his big win. "I knew I was fresher as I didn't race as much as them yesterday, so I was waiting for the last run. I saw that Henri wasn't at his best, so I tried to keep with Jonny as much as possible. I was so down after yesterday, I didn't know if I wante to race this Sunday. I still can't believe Ive won. You never know, anything can happen."

In the end Luis led the way through the line ahead of Brownlee and Schoeman, which was just enough to net the Frenchman the overall title. Brownlee would take the weekend's event, but Luis won the overall championship, ahead of Schoeman and Brownlee.

      Zaferes too consistent

The Super League format really seems to work for Katie Zaferes, who managed to overcome a bike crash at the last event in  the series in Mallorca to hang on to her overall lead heading into the racing in Singapore. There she took the first day of racing and came oh-so-close to taking the second day, too,

Zaferes lost to French speedster Cassandre Beaugrand in a photo finish, which netted the Frenchwoman the weekend title, but no one was close to Zaferes in the overall race, who was well ahead of runner- up Rachel Klamer in the final points standings. Beaugrand's great weekend was enough to net her third in the overall standings, too.

“I am really happy and a little disappointed because it was so close," Zaferes said after the race. "I gave it everything I had and it’s always nice to come out on top. It’s been a great series. Super League makes you better all-round. You have to work on every little thing – both physically and mentally, and even emotionally. It’s high pressure coming into this race, and I knew I had to perform well. I think it sets me up well for the rest of the season. I’m really happy with where I am.”

How close was that? The Enduro title goes to Cassandra Beaugrand.
