There were no issues with the swim this year (last year the swim had to be cancelled) and athletes got to take on the challenging swim from just off the shores of Alcatraz Island and swim their way back to San Francisco for one of the sport's most historic events. Once they complete the 1.5 mile swim (2.4 km) the competitors then take on a challenging 18 mile (30 km) bike ride and follow that up with an 8 mile (12.8 km) run that includes stretches along sandy beaches and steep climbs.

Ben Kanute made it two in a row at the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon, leading out of the water and holding off a determined Cameron Dye for a seven second win. Sarah Haskins took her second Escape win despite getting a one-minute penalty for mounting her bike too early coming out of transition, but still held off Alicia Kaye by 15 seconds.
