It is the season of new moms! Add Jodie Cunnama (nee Swallow) to the list of moms-to-be. As our way of saying congratulations, we'll make this great shot of the triathlon power-couple our photo of the day.
After she failed to start Ironman South Africa (which served as the Ironman African Championship) earlier this month people wondered if Cunnama, who had won her seventh straight Ironman 70.3 South Africa title earlier this year, might be pregnant. Turns out those rumors were correct.
Born in the UK, Swallow grew up as one of her country's best junior swimmers and runners. She eventually turned to triathlon and represented the UK at the 2004 Olympic games in Athens. After getting over an eating disorder and a torn Achilles tendon, she turned to long-distance racing. In 2009 she took the ITU Long Distance World Championship and a year later dominated the Ironman 70.3 World Championship with one of her signature wire-to-wire wins. Last year she took her second ITU long distance crown.
Husband James is also one of the world's best triathletes (it's not hard to call them the world's fastest triathlon couple), having won Challenge Roth in 2012, finished fourth in Kona in 2013 along with numerous other long distance titles.
Add baby Cunnama to the list of "frightening gene pool" babies who will be arriving in 2017. Congratulations Jodie and James!
