There’s been a U23 world championship. There’s been lots of WTS podiums. There’s been a few world cup wins, but Emma Jackson’s impressive triathlon career didn’t include a WTS win … until today. The Australian sprinted clear of American Summer Rappaport and her countrywoman Ashleigh Gentle to nail the win at the ITU World Triathlon Edmonton is dramatic fashion.

Rappaport started the day off in style, leading the way out of the water, with countrywoman Taylor Spivey and Carolina Routier hot on her heels. Those three looked to be on track to set up a three-woman breakaway group, but an enervated chase group driven by Taylor Knibb and Ashleigh Gentle were able to reel in the lead three into the second of five loops on the bike.

The large lead group stayed together into T2, setting up a 5 km road race for the title. Initially a group of including Rappaport, Spivey, Gentle, Belgium’s Claire Michel and Aussie Jaz Hedgeland seemed to be ready to make a break, but Jackson surged up to the lead group and things started to split up. Heading into the last of three loops the group was down to four with Rappaport out in front being closely marked by Gentle, Michel and Jackson. Michel was first to drop off the pace, then Gentle fell back, leaving things down to a sprint between Jackson and Rappaport. With 500 m to go Jackson pulled ahead and stayed there to the line, nailing her first WTS win.
