The final start list for this year's Ironman World Championship is led by the two defending champions, Jan Frodeno and Daniela Ryf, who are both looking to win their third straight titles on the Big Island. There are some other interesting statistics around the final start list:

When it comes to countries, the USA leads the way on the pro women's side, with nine of the pro women in the field. Germany and Great Britain each have seven pro women in the field, followed by Australia with five. Denmark has to have the highest pro to population ratio - the country with just 5.7 million inhabitants has three pro women represtented.

Australia remains the men's pro "factory" when it comes to Ironman racing - 10 men (we moved Joe Gambles, who was listed as American on the Ironman press release, back to the Aussie fold) hail from down under. Germany and the USA are next up with seven athletes each.

Germany might not have the most pro men in the field, but it's hard to argue they were the dominant country last year after sweeping the podium (Frodeno, Sebastian Kienle and Patrick Lange) along with two others in the top 10 - Andi Boecherer (fifth) and Boris Stein (seventh).

An all-German podium: Sebastian Kienle, Jan Frodeno and Patrick Lange.
