Well this will certainly be interesting. Ironman has announced its first race in Slovenia, which is cool enough, but what makes Ironman Slovenia Istria really unique is that the bike course will cross over the border and follow the Italian coast.
The race is set for September 23, 2018.
The day will begin with a 1.9 km swim that starts and finishes in Ukmar Square in the heart of Koper, a fortfied town famous for its cathedral and multiple palaces.
The 90.1-km bike course heads through the old city and then through Ankaran before crossing into Italy and following the Italian coast. Once back to Slovenia the course heads through one of Slovenia's oldest villages, Osop, with "beautiful stone houses and picturesque streets." The ride ends after a couple of climbs with a long descent that takes in some spectacular views of Koper, Izola and Piran.
The two-lap 21.1-km run course heads through Koper and then follows the coast to Izola and back, finishing up in Koper's promenade.
