How the pros get to Nice and Kona

There's no more ranking system for pro athletes to get to the Ironman World Championship or the Ironman 70.3 World Championship - now pros must qualifying based on their finishes at races. A look at the qualifying spots for Ironman and Ironman 70.3 races.

After many years of following a qualifying system for the pros based on points, Ironman announced last year that professional qualifying for the 2019 Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France will be based on finish position at the various Ironman events around the world.

“Finishing atop the podium at an Ironman or Ironman 70.3 event is a great accomplishment and the reward for that should be a place at the starting line at the world championship events,” Andrew Messick, Ironman CEO, said in a press release announcing the changes. “The return to the slot system celebrates our champions and Ironman host communities around the world and changes the focus squarely back to recognizing great performances on race day. If you win you are in and athletes will no longer need to calculate how to plan their race schedule to qualify.”

The new qualifying system started on September 9, 2018 for Kona at Ironman Wisconsin and Ironman Wales, while the new qualifying system for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nice began on July 8, 2018 at Ironman 70.3 Jonkoping and Ironman 70.3 Ecuador. This year those same races begin the qualifying for the 2020 world championship events.

The new system allocates automatic selections for the winners of each event, with certain other races allocated either more slots (the various regional championships) or others that will include "discretionary" slots. Those slots will be allocated to the men's and women's fields based on the number of participants in each division on race day.

There remains a few other "exemption" opportunuites for athletes - Ironman and 70.3 world champions will receive an exemption for five years after their win and podium finishers from the previous year may also be eligible for an exemption based on Ironman's discretion. The Ironman world champion will also be allowed to enter the following year's 70.3 world championship and the 70.3 world champ will also be able to enter the following year's race in Kona, too.
