It's one thing to be expected to dominate a race, but it's not always easy to make it all happen according to plan. Pretty much every triathlon fan on the planet expected Flora Duffy to come out of the water at the front, dominate on the bike and then hold off the rest of the field on the run heading into the Commonwealth Games.

And that's exactly what Duffy did, doing the tiny island country of Bermuda proud and providing the first gold medal the country has won at the Commonwealth Games since 1990.

Jessica Learmonth led the way out of the water and got to be part of the Duffy domination game, hanging tough for a silver medal. The two were over 40 seconds up on the main chase group heading out on the bike course and padded that lead to 1:10 over a group of nine that included all three Australians (Ashleigh Gentle, Gillian Backhouse and Charlotte McShane), Joanna Brown (CAN), Vicky Holland (GBR) and Non Stanford, representing Wales. (Sophie Coldwell, another British athlete, found herself in no-woman's land between the leaders and the chase group and would eventually join in, too.)

Once on the run Duffy quickly pulled clear of Learmonth and easily ran her way to the gold medal. Brown, Holland and Gentle looked to be racing for the bronze, but Holland and Brown dropped the Australian with about 1.5 km to go, turning it into a two woman race for the final medal. They looked to be getting close to Learmonth over the final few hundred meters, but the swim leader held on for the silver. Brown pulled clear of Holland with the finish line in sight to take the bronze.
