Cunnama and Lester take Ironman Nice

Due to the heat wave that is hitting much of Europe, Ironman France-Nice featured shortened bike and run courses. James Cunnama blasted through the run to deny Frederik Van Lierde his sixth title, while Carrie Lester led from start to finish to take the women's title.

Frederik Van Lierde came out of the water in front of a lead group of seven that included his countryman Bert Jammaer and James Cunnama and then appeared to be on track to take his sixth Ironman France-Nice title when he led off the bike. The Belgian enjoyed a lead of almost six minutes on France's Kevin Runstadler and over eight minutes on Cunnama.

Once on the run, though, it quickly became apparent that Van Lierde wasn't his normal self as he immediately started to lose time on the two men chasing behind. By 10 km his lead was down to 45 seconds on Runstadler and just under four minutes on Cunnama. By 15 km the 2013 Ironman world champion was in third.

Cunnama took the lead shortly afterwards and never looked back taking the title with Runstadler finishing second. Van Lierde hung tough to round out the podium.

Lester leads the way

Carrie Lester was in front from the gun, coming out of the water with a four-minute lead on France's Candice Mizon and just over four minutes on Manon Genet (FRA) and Belgian Tine Deckers. From there the Aussie never looked back, finishing the bike with just over three minutes on Deckers and a whopping 14 minutes on Genet.

Out on the run Lester kept Deckers roughly the same gap down throughout, managing her pacing perfectly in the hot conditions to take the day. Decker finished just under four minutes behind in second, with Genet rounding out the podium.
