Cancun, Mexico is considered one of the world's most popular tourist destinations and, over the years, has hosted numerous major triathlon events including an ITU world championship and an Ironman 70.3 event (that was eventually moved to Cozumel). This weekend Cancun welcomes another triathlon event with the debut of Challenge Cancun to take on a fast, flat half-distance race.

Highlighting the women's race is three-time Ironman World Champion Mirinda Carfrae, who will face some stiff competition from her Aussie countrywoman Ellie Salthouse (second at Ironman 70.3 Geelong and third at Ironman 70.3 Oceanside) and last year's Challenge Family World Bonus winner, Yvonne Van Vlerken (NED).

Last year's Ironman Mont-Tremblant and Ironman Louisville champ Cody Beals heads up the men's field, but the Canadian will face some fast competition in the form of 2008 Ironman 70.3 world champ Andy Potts and another American, Ben Hoffman, who is fresh off a brilliant win at the Ironman African Championship earlier this month. Another man to keep an eye on will be Canadian Taylor Reid.
