Carfrae and Laundry master Mont-Tremblant

Mirinda Carfrae rode her way to the front and never looked back, as did Jackson Laundry at Ironman 70.3 Mont-Tremblant.

When was the last time you saw a race report that included the words "Mirinda Carfrae opened up a four-minute lead on the bike?" Yeah, not something we remember, either. Ironman Mont-Tremblant, though, proved to be Mirinda Carfrae's cycling coming out party as the three-time Kona champ from Australia powered away from some of the sport's best cyclists on her way to a convincing win.

In fact the entire day was an impressive one for Carfrae, who was competing with six stitches in her calf after a bottle fell from the trunk of her car and exploded on Friday. Carfrae trailed swim-leader Jennifer Spieldenner (USA) out of the water by just over two minutes and then steadily moved through the group of women ahead of her out of the water through the early stages of the bike. That group included some impressive cyclists - Lauren Goss (USA) had been second out of the water and moved to the front of the race early. Defending champion Meredith Kessler was not feeling great, but still was only 10 seconds back after the swim. In the mix early, too, was Canadian super-cyclist Rachel McBride, who Carfrae was keeping in her sights. McBride would get a five-minute drafting penalty, though and would drop out of the hunt for the lead.

By the halfway point of the ride Carfrae was in front and steadily pulled away from the rest of the women. By the time she hit T2 her lead was about four minutes on Goss, Spieldenner and another American Ceceila Davis-Hayes, with McBride and Kessler just under six-minutes back.

Usually the story line goes something of the order of "Carfrae only trailed by four minutes," so it was hardly surprising that she would run her way clear to yet another title. Her 1:20:03 split was the fastest of the day for the women and got her to the line 6:28 on Goss, who had forgotten her socks and crossed the line with bloody feet. Kessler managed to overcome her tough day with an impressive run that got her to the final spot on the podium.

Laundry powers clear on the bike

Leading the men out of the water was American Eric Lagerstrom, with countryman Hunter Lussi just four seconds behind. Canadian Brent McMahon was the next man out, 23 seconds down, with his countryman Jackson Laundry exactly 90 seconds behind as he started the bike in 12th place.

Laundry would steadily gain on the men ahead of him and by 33 km into the ride he was out in front with American Andrew Yoder a few seconds behind. Yoder would stay just a few seconds back all the way to T2 as the pair started the run just over two-minutes up on a group that included Lagerstrom, McMahon and Lussi.

Laundry never seemed threatened as he cruised the run, eventually posting a run-split two-seconds quicker than McMahon to take the title with virtually the same cushion he started the run with. McMahon bounced back from a tough day at Ironman Boulder two weeks before with the runner-up spot, while Lagerstrom rounded out the podium.
