Cassandre Beaugrand stunned the field with the run of her life, while Laura Lindemann outsprinted Katie Zaferes again to thrill the German crowd at the ITU World Triathlon Hamburg.

France's Cassandre Beugrand used the run of her life to cruise away from the world's best (all of the current top-10 in the ITU women's standings were on the line in Hamburg) to take WTS Hamburg in impressive style.

Duffy can't get away

Jessica Learmonth (GBR) led the way out of the water and the first few were able to open a narrow gap on the rest of the field early in the bike. The six-woman group included two-time ITU world champion Flora Duffy (BER), Learmonth (GBR), Taylor Spivey (USA) and Georgia Taylor-Brown (GBR). Duffy continually tried to break away from the group over the second half of the race, but each attack would be reeled in (often by Spivey).

The chase pack behind the lead group steadily grew and kept eating time into the lead pack, eventually erasing what had ballooned to a 40-second gap, mostly due to the efforts of 2012 Olympic gold medalist Nicola Spirig. That meant a huge group charged into T2 all at the same time.

The last of the group to leave T2 was Laura Lindemann, who struggled a bit to get her shoes on, but quickly caught up to the group and started to move forward.

It didn't take long, though, for Beaugrand to put her stamp on the race. Looking completely in control, the 21-year-old simply ran away from the rest of the women. Duffy never really looked herself, or at least the "herself" we've come to know over the past two years, but was still able to stay with the group chasng Beaugrand that included Katie Zaferes (USA), Duffy, 2012 Olympic gold medalist Nicola Spirig (SUI), Kirsten Kasper (USA), along with Great Britain's Non Stanford and Jodie Stimpson.

A year ago Lindemann outsprinted Zaferes for the bonze medal, this time the two found themselves locked in an epic sprint again, this time for silver. Once again Lindemann was inspired by the raucous crowd, which cheered loudly as she approachd the finish line, with Zaferes taking third. A spirited Spirg finished fourth.
