Jacob Birtwhistle has become one of the sport's ultimate closers - as he did a couple of years ago when he helped Australia take the mixed relay world championship, the speedster overcame an 18-second deficit to American Eli Hemming out of the water to take the big win.

Five teams had to serve penalties for various infractions during the last stage of the race, setting up an exciting battle for the bronze medal as Frances Leo Bergere had to watch from the penalty box as New Zealand's Hayden Wilde flew by to give the Kiwi's the bronze medal behind Australia and the United States.

The first leg of the race saw American Taylor Spivey put the her country into a 20-second lead after the bike, but some spirited running by the likes of Germany's Laura Lindemann, Australia's Ashleigh Gentle and Portugal's Melanie Santos managed to reduce the deficit to five seconds.

In the second leg Ben Kanute couldn't keep the Americans in front as Germany's Valentin Wernz and Aussie Luke Willian moved to the front.

The third leg saw the Americans and the Aussies back to the front as Katie Zaferes and Emma Jeffcoat pulled clear on the swim. Zaferes would pull clear on the run, setting up the exciting come from behind win for Birtwhistle.
