Ellie Salthouse (AUS) defended her title at Ironman 70.3 Miami by posting the day's second-fastest swim and then biking and running fast enough to hold off a determined Angela Naeth. Brazil's Igor Amorelli took the men's race after a strong bike put him clear of the field into T2.

Salthouse swims her way to the title

After coming out of the water in second place (19 seconds behind swim-leader American Jennifer Spieldenner and 17 seconds up on Great Brieaain's Leanda Cave), Salthouse charged to the front of the bike. By 21.1 km the Australian took the the lead, one which she wouldn't relinquish through the rest of the ride. Angela Naeth, who was over three minutes down at the end of the swim, closed the gap to 2:27 at one point on the bike, but couldn't get any closer to the Australian. In the end Salthouse would hang tough to successfully defend her title (4:19:57) over Naeth (4:22:34), while Great Britain's Sarah Lewis rounded out the top three  with her 4:27:04.

Amorelli back after Kona

No-doubt disappointed with his 14th-place finish in Kona, Brazil's Igor Amorelli rode his way to the front of the race and held on tough through the half-marathon in Miami to take the men's title. After trailing out of the water by about a minute, Amorelli quickly made a statement on the bike and arrived in T2 with a 3:30 lead over Tim Rea and over five minutes on a group of six that included Paul Matthews (AUS), Paolo Roberto Maciel (BRA), Vinicius Canhedo (BRA) and Franz Loeschke (GER).

There was no catching Amorelli, who hung on for the win (3:59:43), while Loeschke (4:02:26) and Maciel (4:04:06) ran past Rea to get spots on the podium. Canhedo also managed to get passed the Australian to take fourth.
