TriathlonWorld.com caught up with Dave Schell, the Director of Education at TrainingPeaks about the upcoming TrainingPeaks University session taking place in Edmonton, Canada December 4 and 5.

TriathlonWorld.com: What is the TrainingPeaks University all about?

Dave Schell: TrainingPeaks University (TPU) was started back in 2013 as a way to show endurance coaches all the tips and tricks of using their TrainingPeaks Coach Account to its fullest potential. Since then it has evolved to what it is today, a two-day workshop designed to teach coaches how to work more efficiently in order to save time and grow their business. Not only do we cover nearly everything in their account, but we also discuss some practical application and how to leverage the metrics in TP to coach their athletes better.

Who is it geared for?

TPU is targeted toward any coach who wants to save time, grow their business, and/or become a better coach. In any given TPU class we have coaches who have been using TP for 10 days and coaches who have been using it for 10 years and from all different backgrounds. Not only will you learn all the ins and outs of coaching with TP but you have a great opportunity to meet and learn from other coaches in other disciplines.

Who teaches it?

TrainingPeaks University is taught by myself (Dave Schell), the TrainingPeaks Director of Education, and Joe Friel, TrainingPeaks co-founder, Training Bible Author and endurance coaching icon.

Do you need to be a coach to benefit from the program?

TPU is very much geared toward coaches and much of what we discuss over the two days will involve using TrainingPeaks as a coach. However, we have had athletes attend in the past and I think they walk away with a deeper understanding of the metrics in TrainingPeaks and how they can use them in their own training —and perhaps we plant a seed of desire for them to pursue coaching as a new career path.

Will there be anything unique about the Edmonton event?

Every TPU is somewhat unique in that we are always updating the curriculum to reflect the new features and solutions added to the software. In addition to that, coaches who attend TPU in Edmonton will also have the opportunity to attend the ITU Science + Triathlon World Conference at the early bird rate for a week filled with continuing coaching education.
