Stein back in form

Florian Angert dominated the swim - the 25-year-old was a minute up on the first chase group and enjoyed a two-minute gap to many of the favorites including Horst Reichel, Timo Bracht and Boris Stein.

After a tough day at the Challenge Championship in Samorin two weeks ago, Stein rode aggressively and opened up a huge gap on the rest of the field heading into T2.

Angert couldn't hold off Canadian Trevor Wurtele on the run, who ran his way to second, or Horst Reichel, who would eventually finish third. Angert got to the line in fourth, just ahead of veteran Timo Bracht.

Sämmler hangs on for the win

A stacked field was on hand in the women's race (even after pre-race favorite Laura Philipp pulled out due to illness), including former world-record holder Yvonne Van Vlerken, six-time Kona champion Natascha Badmann, three-time 70.3 worlds medalist Heather Wurtele, age group world champ Svenja Thös and, of course, Daniela Sämmler, who finished third at the Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt last year.

Wurtele was the first of the favorites out of the water, with Sämmler and Van Vlerken 90 seconds down. Van Vlerken crashed on the bike, putting her out of the race, but Sämmler would move to the front and enjoy a lead of almost five minutes starting the run.

The German held on for the win ahead of Wutele, while Thös rounded out the podium ahead of Badmann.
