Well, so much for the big duel. Roughly 12 miles into the bike course at Ironman 70.3 Oceanside, Jan Frodeno, who, at that point was in the lead, was forced to pull over thanks to a flat tire. He would eventually pull out of the race and the man we were so excited to watch the German compete with, Canada's Lionel Sanders, dominated the rest of the field to take his second straight Oceanside title.

Frodeno solos the swim, but Sanders closer than expected

After one of the best swims of his life, Sanders climbed out of the water just under three minutes behind Frodeno, who had pulled away to a solo lead during the first leg of the race. Sanders made up two minutes of that gap within the first 12 miles of the ride.

Once the Canadian got to the front he never looked back, leading by five minutes into T2 and then cruising through the run to take the win. American Chris Leiferman would close a couple of minutes of the gap by the line to take second, while Switzerland's Ronnie Schildknecht would round out the podium.

Lawrence continues her winning ways

As she did in winning the Ironman 70.3 World Championship last year, Holly Lawrence (GBR) used a dominating ride to earn the women's title. Out of the water in a lead group with Jennifer Spieldenner (USA) and a few seconds ahead of Australian Ellie Salthouse, Lawrence put on a cycling clinic to come into T2 well ahead of the rest of the field. Her 2:21:40 ride was five minutes faster than the second-fastest women's ride, which was posted by Canadian Heather Wurtele.

Lawrence continued to gain ground on the rest of the women on the run, eventually finishing over nine minutes ahead of Salthouse, who managed to run past Wurtele for second. American Heather Jackson had a great final leg to get herself to fourth.

Rachel Joyce's comeback after having a baby last fall was a successful one - the new mom finished seventh.
