Ronnie Schildknecht (SUI) had hoped to make it 10 in a row in Zurich, but the Swiss star would have to drop out of the race, leaving Australia's Nick Kastelein to take the title in Zurich. Celine Schärer (SUI) led out of the water and never looked back to take the woman's title.

Kastelein stops the streak

Nick Kastelein trains with Jan Frodeno in Girona, Spain for much of the racing season, so it comes as no surprise that he excelled today at Ironman Switzerland. Swiss fans had, of course, hoped to see their hero Ronnie Schildknecht take his 10th tltle in Zurich, but it was not to be as he would be forced to drop out of the race early in the run due to cramps.

Kastelein was amongst the leaders out of the water, then rode away from the rest of the field, enjoying a six-minute lead over his rivals into T2 before nailing the race with a solid 2:51 marathon. Switzerland did get two men on the podium, though, as Ruedi Wild ran his way to the runner up position ahead of countryman Jan Van Berkel.

Schärer leads the way

After coming out of the water well ahead of her main rivals, Celine Schärer faced a bit of a challenge from Regula Rohrbach during the first half of the bike, but Swiss athlete who has recently started working with Brettt Sutton held off that challenge and cruised through the run to a decisive victory over Denmark's Tine Holst. Switzerland's own Martina Kunz rounded out the podium.
