The town of Lac-Mégantic is set to host the first extreme triathlon in North America next summer. The first edition of the Canada Man/ Woman Xtreme Triathlon will take place on July 9th, 2017.

Like the other Xtreme triathlon events in Europe, the Canada Man/ Woman event will showcase breathtaking landscapes and a challenging course.

The day begins (at 4:30 a.m.) with a 3.8 km swim in Lac-Mégantic. That will be followed by a 180 km bike ride incorporating over 2,500 m of climbing, followed by a 42.2 km run. Participants will have 15 hours to reach Mont Mégantic National Park and attack the last 8.5 km that lead to the Mont Mégantic Observatory. The goal is to touch the stars before midnight. For security reasons, athletes must be accompanied by an assistant who will support them for this last stretch.

Athletes will climb over 4,000 m through the entire 226 km course, in part thanks to the mountain top finish on Mont Mégantic at 1,105 m.

Extreme triathlons have a strong presence in Europe. Endurance Aventure (the company producing the race) representatives Daniel Poirier and Jean-Thomas Boily guarantee the Lac-Mégantic Canada Man / Woman extreme triathlon will have a Canadian twist.

“This is partly because of the amazing landscapes and natural attractions present in the Lac-Mégantic region. Beyond race times, the triathlon will represent an exceptional life experience with ups and downs, mixed emotions, and most of all, an unrivaled sense of pride and accomplishment.

“This triathlon will be intense, wild and authentic. Since Lac-Mégantic residents are known for their hospitality, triathletes will be welcomed at the start and finish as if they were surrounded by family members.” Like other extreme triathlons presented around the globe, the Lac-Mégantic event will be open to a maximum of 100 participants due to its complex nature. Among these participants, there will be many Europeans. 25 teams of three triathletes will also be accepted.

An internationally renowned ambassador

Canadian Olympian Lyne Bessette will be the Canada Man / Woman Xtreme Triathlon ambassador. The gold medal winner road cyclist from the Commonwealth Games and six-time Canadian champion happily accepted the event organizers’ invitation to act as ambassador for this first edition. Bessette will line up at the start - she has taken to endurance competitions since her retirement and will be one of the women to watch on July 9th in Lac-Mégantic.

The race website and registration will be opening soon - we'll have more information here on TriathlonWorld.com once it is available.
