Frederik Van Lierde (BEL) made his own Kona-capable statement this weekend with an impressive win at Ironman Nice. Near the front out of the water, the 2013 Ironman world champion pulled away on the challenging Nice bike course, but had some company into T2 - only 26 seconds separated Van Lierde from Cameron Wurf (AUS), who managed an impressive 4:35 bike split (toVan Lierde's 4:39) on the mountainous course to provide some company at the front.

Out on the run, though, there was no touching Van Lierde, although Italy's Alessandro Degasperi sure gave it a go. The Italain ripped through the first half marathon in 1:18, which was enough to eventually net him second, but wasn't able to catch Van Lierde, who notched up his fourth Nice win in 8:31:31. Degasperi would fade a bit over the second half of the marathon, but still managed a 2:43 in coming across the line in second. France's Denis Chevrot rounded out the top three after passing Eneko Llanos (ESP), who was coming off an impressive runner-up finish in Austria a few weeks ago.

Lester leads the way

Annabel Luxford managed to lead her countrywoman Carrie Lester out of the water, but would eventually be passed as Lester's 5:19 bike split was just over five minutes faster. Lester would then pad her lead on the flat, out-and-back run course along the Promenade Des Anglais to capture her fourth Ironman title. Luxford would hang tight for second, while Nicole Valentine (USA) rounded out the pro podium.

Third place overall went to Linda Guinoiseau (FRA), who won the 40 to 44 category in an impressive 10:21:33 - that put her time 20 seconds ahead of Valentine's. Petra Krejcova (CZE), another age group athlete (35-39), finished fifth.
