Richard Murray, Henri Schoeman and Wian Sullwald took the top three spots at the Cape Town ITU World Cup on the weekend, the first time South Africa has ever swept the podium at an ITU event. Lucy Hall and Jessica Learmonth put Great Britain on the first two spots of the podium, followed by Japan's Ai Ueda.

Wire to wire racing

Hall and Learmonth are training partners and spent the entire race together. Holland's Rachel Klamer made a concerted effort to get up with the British pair on the bike and run, but faded and Ueda eventually passed her for the bronze medal.

Hall and Learmonth had decided they would wait until the blue carpet coming into the finish line to sprint, which Hall took to claim her first World Cup win.

Home soil domination

A large group of men came out of the water and stayed together on the bike, setting a brisk 5 km run for the men's title. Murray had been given a time penalty for dropping his helmet outside the box in T2, so he pushed hard to open up a gap on Schoeman early in the run. He was able to bank enough time to serve the penalty and still cruise across the line ahead of the Olympic bronze medalist.
