It just never seems to make any sense that there's not more takers to the world duathlon scene. Proof that the sport just doesn't have the same draw as triathlon came with a look at the size of the fields that took to the elite men's and women's races last weekend in Penticton - 14 women and 30 men toed the line. (And those numbers included the U23 athletes as well.)

The fields might have been small, but the talent pool was immense as the athletes on hand ripped through the 10 km run/ 40.5 km bike/ 5 km run course.

Australia's Felicity Sheedy-Ryan returned to the top of the podium at the 2017 ITU Duathlon World Championships - she'd won the race in 2012. Finishing the first run just a second behind reigning duathlon world champion Emma Pallant (33:30), Sheedy-Ryan pulled away on the bike and entered T2 all alone before cruising to victory. Margarita Garcia Cañellas (ESP) managed to get clear of Pallant on the bike and hold her off for the silver medal, with Pallant rounding out the podium.

Nicolas back on top

Try as he might, Britain's Mark Buckingham couldn't get clear on the first run or the bike, which saw a big group enter T1 together and a breakaway group of two that included Benoit Nicolas (FRA) and Emilio Martin (ESP) enter T2 together ahead of the main pack. The two leaders were both given 15 second penalties for incorrectly racking their bikes in T2, but that wasn't enough the two from taking the top spots on the podium as Nicolas regained the title he'd won in 2014. Buckingham had to settle with the bronze medal.
